Modern Warfare 2 shock: No servers or mods for PC version!

October 20, 2009

Call of Duty community manager Rob Bowling, also known as ‘fourzerotwo’, has confirmed in a podcast that the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will not support user-created mods. Worse, it will not support dedicated servers. PC gamers will have to suffer peer-to-peer connections, just like their console-owning cousins.

Mr. Bowling could offer no defence for this move, and simply stated that: “The team’s focusing on having it very equal on every platform” and “We’re doing a lot of work on the back end.”

Previous PC versions of CoD have supported dedicated servers. Their absence will apparently make the game “much more accessible to the PC community as a whole.”

You can listen to the podcast here; skip forward to around the 1:41 mark for the awful truth…

Check out our follow up story here, where Dice throws its two cents into the debate, as well as details about how you can have your say.

Elecom nanoSSD slots straight into SATA port

August 26, 2009

Elecom have announced two new solid-state drives, the 8GB and 16GB nanoSSD ESD-IDSAA Series, which are designed to slot directly into a SATA motherboard slot. Measuring 25 x 39 x 6.5 mm, the nanoSSDs can be used as startup drives on a main system or, Elecom suggest, the primary drive on a compact Mini-ITX setup.

Despite the diminuative scale, the data transfer speeds are still fair. The Elecom SSDs manage 75MB/s read rates and 30MB/s write-rates, and of course there’s no noise and cooling requirements are minimal.

An auxiliary power cable – which gets its juice from a molex pass-through – is also supplied in case the Vcc pin from the SATA port isn’t sufficient to power the nanoSSD. No word on pricing, but pre-orders should apparently already have started in Japan.

Battlefield 1943 Won’t Be Out On PC This Year

August 21, 2009

bf43

Hey, PC users. Sorry if you thought Battlefield 1943 would be out on PC sometime in 2009. Really sorry. Because it won’t be.

Instead, the game has been delayed into 2010, DICE’s Gordon Van Dyke telling G4TV:

We haven’t released a Frostbite [DICE's game engine] built game on PC, so going into this project we lacked a starting foundation we had on Console. There are also many different and unique only challenges to the PC that has lead to us pushing the release even further to Q1 CY 2010 [early next year]. This was a hard pill to swallow, but it was absolutely needed to ensure the features and functionality that PC Players have come to expect from Battlefield on PC are not missing. Things like support for DirectX 9 and 10, higher player count (up to 32-player matches), wide peripheral support i.e. Joysticks for flying, VoIP, and ranked server provider hosting. So it was and still is the absolutely right decision, for quality sake, to not release until it is ready.

Sad reading that a Battlefield game of all games is having trouble being ported to the PC, but everything he says makes sense. Better to wait and have them do it right than have them do it…not right.
